The Experience
The Byre has a huge central slate chimney, a vaulted beamed ceiling and an open-plan living area in earthy colours. It’s a light, warm and sociable space and views from every window soar over the romantically remote Dales. The well-equipped kitchen is a joy to cook in.
Two sumptuous bedrooms downstairs have super king beds which can be twins, plump pillows and duvets and views of windswept hills; en suite bathrooms sport whirlpool baths with overhead showers. Stone steps lead down to an enclosed courtyard garden with fire pit and furniture for long summer evenings outdoors. Light the wood-burner and snuggle down with a book, watch a film on the big TV or head to a comfy sofa and lots of books on the mezzanine floor.
Find a basket of fresh sourdough, locally made crisps and chocolate, a bottle of wine. There are interconnecting doors to The Haystore, so take both for a party of eight, or all three for a jolly get-together with up to 14.

We spent the last week in The Byre with our puppy Norman and it was perfect. The Byre is a stunning cottage in a beautiful location. The cottage was incredibly clean when we arrived and the level of detail displayed the thought Carly and Richard put into their properties. The toiletries supplied were high quality and also totally sustainable as were all the cleaning products. A bird feeder was full and placed in full view of one of the sofas. These are just 2 examples of many details that had been thought of. It was a cracking cottage and we will definitely return.

We had a brilliant time, the cottage was fantastic, really clean and comfortable with everything we could need including loads of kitchen stuff. We loved the upside down arrangement and the views from the lounge. Beds were comfortable, good showers. Kids enjoyed playing chess on the mezzanine! A highlight for me was the red squirrels in the garden and the variety of birds at the feeders. We saw bats at night too and hares on the fields. We did some local walks including Green Bell from the door and Cautley Spout. We also went across to Ullswater & Kendal which aren't far so a great location.

I recently booked all 3 properties at The Green for my 50th birthday. The standard of all them is off the charts. I’ve stayed in plenty of holiday lets, but the thought that has gone into equipping these is next level. Could not have wanted more and were even given a lift to the station when taxis proved to be an issue.

Just back from a week in the dales staying in the Byre. Everything you need is provided including a picnic set we didn't get the chance to use. Uber dog friendly accommodation is hard to find but Green Cumbria provided shampoo / sponge & basin that came in handy as the moors can get messy for mutley. The hosts are next door if you need anything & very accommodating. Even let me charge my EV which was really handy & saved stopping on the drive home. The house is spotless & a welcome pack which goes a long way to settling in after a long drive. PS village pubs are excellent & only a 20 min walk

This was our second visit to The Green although a different cottage as The Haystore we stayed in previously was booked. We love it, it’s perfect for us & our dogs. Lovely, spotlessly clean & comfortable cottage that you won’t be disappointed with if you decide to book. A little pricey maybe but you really do get what you pay for. Thank you Carly & Richard for another fantastic break 😊

Location
The neighbourhood
Ravenstonedale is a five-minute drive or a 25-minute walk over fields or a quiet lane. Here you'll find two pubs including the award-winning Black Swan. Kirkby Stephen is a 10-minute drive, an old market town with historic buildings, small shops and cobbled yards. Hop on the Carlisle to Settle railway, visit Sedbergh, the 'book town', cycle quiet fell roads or join a guided walk with owner Richard.
Local points of interest from Richard and Carly
- Enjoy a fabulous meal and wonderful selection of cask ales & wines at the award-winning Black Swan in Ravenstonedale. Number 20 in the 2023 Top 50 UK Gastropubs the menu revolves around locally sourced, seasonal Cumbrian dishes. Dog & family friendly.
- Take a hike in the fabulous Howgill Fells; as Alfred Wainwright once described them “a herd of squatting elephants” the Howgill’s are often unfrequented and offer a superb range of hikes; many of which can be started straight from the door.
- Wrap up and enjoy an evening of stargazing using the guide & kit provided. Located in a Dark Skies reserve we have very little light pollution meaning that on a clear night you can see thousands of stars and even distant galaxies!
- Take a bike ride to Pendragon Castle, described as a romantic ruin, founded by Uther Pendragon, father of Arthur Pendragon of Round Table fame. The 6-mile ride through the countryside to get there on single track lanes is magical.
- Ever wanted to learn how to navigate in the hills or mountains with a proper map? Book a day of guided walking with owner Richard and learn some new skills along the way. Pop away the guide books…he’ll have you planning your own routes in no time!
- Visit the local dog friendly attractions with your furry friends. Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour and Tearoom, Lowther Castle and Gardens, Grizedale Forest and Whinlatter Forest, The Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway or how about the Ullswater's 'Steamers'.

Introducing
Richard and Carly
For Carly and Richard the seed was sown many years ago about living in the countryside and having a holiday let property which would allow them to share their love of nature and the outdoors with guests. Their eco credentials are sound with ground source heating, solar panels and their own borehole, but they are keen to go further in their journey towards biodiversity and sustainability.
We loved our stay at the Byre, it had everything you could possibly need for a week’s stay. Nice and cosy in the evenings following our walks with the wood burner and plenty of logs provided. We enjoyed seeing some great wildlife including the red squirrels… Two great pubs in the local village serving super meals. Would definitely recommend and will be back again!
