The Experience

This Victorian house has an enviable position in the quiet southern lakes overlooking Coniston Old Man and the Langdales but also the estuary for oodles of wading and migratory birds, including rare osprey. The sitting room is large and light with handsome panelling, plenty of seating and a wood-burner. There’s another with a library of DVDs, so you shan’t feel cramped.

The Aga-warmed kitchen is easy to cook in (there’s another oven and hob too) with all the kit you need. You’ll also find some local treats to get you started, but there’s a good little community shop in the village for stocking up. Bedrooms have those views and a refined feel.

Arnside is a 5-minute drive but you can walk along an old railway track by the shore, pick up fish and chips and walk back while the sun sets. Summer evenings will be sublime: spot red squirrels in the little wood, eat in the sunken garden, wait for stars in the clear skies. The peace is palpable.

Reviews

Beautiful home with a lovely peaceful view and fabulous garden to sit in when the weather is nice. Walk to Arnside for fish and chips or a longer walk to Levens Hall for lunch. Close to the motorway, the Lakes, Kirkby Lonsdale but also far enough away to feel relaxed. Loved every minute, can’t wait to come back.

Louise, Salt lake City

There is everything you need, and the very best views of the estuary and the Lake District fells! A special hideaway to relax and recharge your batteries.

Doreen, Settle

This is the most perfect house in a dream holiday destination. The house was beautiful and had everything we needed. The garden is huge and the driveway has plenty of parking. The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped and we loved cooking on the Aga oven. We couldn’t believe how beautiful the sunset views were out of the window in the living room. This house is in a perfect location for visiting the Lake District. We absolutely loved walking our dog in the woods in Storth village and walking to Leven’s Hall Cafe for lunch.

Molly, Totnes, Devon

This is a simply magical place. Once here you may find it very difficult to leave as you will want to sit and admire the ever-changing views of the estuary and mountains beyond. If you do drag yourself away from the windows, you will enjoy the comfy sofas, beautiful wood panelling, wood-burning stove, the modern well-equipped kitchen and inviting bedrooms. It's a perfect place for a family holiday.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're 10 minutes from the M6 but the feel is very hushed and beautiful. There are walks from the door; gentle strolls to hearty hill climbs or coastal walks in an AONB, such as Silverdale. Birdwatchers will head to nearby Leighton Moss for a spectacular display of birdlife. It's a 25-minute drive to Windermere for boat trips and shopping, or to the lovely town of Kirkby Lonsdale, or the Dales.

Local points of interest from Julie Evans

  • Did you know that the pair of ospreys who nest just over the water from us, pretty much always arrive within 24 hours of each other at the start of their breeding season? Amazing! Come and watch them fish from the house or visit the hide at Foulshaw Moss.
  • Look for fairies in the woods and take the Fairy Steps Challenge! Climb the narrow steps in the limestone without touching the sides and your wish will be granted. Carry on walking for a super lunch at the Wheatsheaf pub in the local village of Beetham.
  • The village of Arnside is a 1/2 hour walk along the shore and is great for pottering in the lovely shops, bakery and pubs. It's also here that you catch the train over the water for the short journey to Grange over Sands and the rest of the Lake District.
  • If you fancy climbing the Yorkshire Three Peaks or any of the magnificent hills and mountains in the Lakes, Sunlight is ideally placed to use as a base camp being equidistant between both National Parks ... and we are only 10 mins drive from J35 of the M6!
  • The estuary in front of Sunlight is one of few places which periodically has a tidal bore. We like to imagine it is like a giant throwing a bucket of water down as the whole bay fills with water within 5 mins! So interesting to watch right from the garden.
  • Take your palate on a Michelin Star journey by eating at one of eleven acclaimed restaurants in Cumbria! Either that or enjoy relaxing at our dinning table with it's stunning views & especially at sunset. Booths supermarket is a handy 5 min drive away too.

Introducing

Julie Evans

Lewis and Julie live in another part of the house with their friendly Labrador, Star. They bought the house many years ago and have restored it well, keeping its old features but modernising it. They feel privileged to be the custodians of such a historic house and are very happy to share it with others.
