The Experience
Tucked away at the quieter end of the Lake District National Park is this 1669 house with pretty windows, lime-plastered walls and rustic beams. Its delightful owners, who live in the house’s other half, have resisted smoothing out the rough edges; 1920s graffiti still adorns the stable dividers. It’s deeply comfortable and attractive and there’s plenty of space for spreading out with two sitting rooms – both with open fires.
You’ll find fresh milk, local homemade sausages, bacon and eggs waiting for you in the fridge as well as a homemade cake. Cooking in the big kitchen by the Aga can be a sociable affair but if you can’t be bothered you can order Jill’s homemade meals before you come. Top up on supplies at the farm shop in Ireby – just two miles away so you can walk. There’s a pub in Uldale (three miles.)
Unwinding here is easy surrounded by the grandness of nature.

High Houses doesn’t feel like being in a rented house. It feels like being at home, but better! From the home-made cake on arrival, to the enormous cast iron bath and the views across the Solway Firth, it’s a perfect combination of beauty, history and comfort.

A really beautiful area in the Lake District; the house is perfect, comfortable and a real home from home. Jill, the owner, couldn't be more helpful and friendly...........for us, with our two grandsons (13yrs and 11yrs) it was a wonderful week with so many choices of things to do and places to see We will definitely stay in High Houses again and have no hesitations at all in recommending it as THE go to place to stay ,,,,,, well worth every penny

A fantastic break from the stresses of life. What a lovely place for the kids to explore and enjoy. A friendly and accepting welcome for our loud children, and a wonderful house to relax in - cooking, painting, playing games and generally enjoying the atmosphere of calm. We would all love to visit again, and I'm sure it won't be long until we do.

Location
The neighbourhood
From the fell behind the house (Binsey Hill) you can enjoy Wainwright's favourite 360 degree view right over the lakes and, with a turn of the head, the Solway Firth and Dumfries and Galloway. This is wild heathery farmland, bursting with lambs in springtime and gorgeous for walks. If get in the car you must (and this place is one to which you come and soon long never to see a car again) then Bassenthwaite for The Pheasant is six and a half miles.
Local points of interest from Jill Green
- Incredible, uninterrupted views of at least 20 miles over farmland and on to Scotland.
- The house is totally surrounded by farmland and brilliant for dog walking - no roads nearby - onto the fell at the back of the house.
- Wildlife watch: badgers, roe deer, foxes, bird-watching and RED SQUIRRELS!
- Walk from the door for a half mile to Wainwrights BINSEY"This gentle hill rises beyond the circular perimeter of the Northern Fells, detached and solitary, like a dunce set apart from the class. It is a viewpoint of outstanding merit".
- Stabling and livery provided for riding holidays, at the farm just below.
- Sailing on Bassenthwaite lake, beneath the beautiful mountain of Skiddaw.

Introducing
Jill Green
Jill was brought up on the estate which was bought by her grandfather, a mill owner from Yorkshire, many years ago. She's a bobby dazzler of an owner who loves looking after guests and making sure they've got everything they need to have a fabulous break in this most beautiful place.
A beautiful home in a beautiful location. Jill is a superb host and the house is wonderfully restored. Loads of walking from the front door, views incredible. Peaceful yet very comfortable living. Highly recommended of the 15 or so excellent Sawday’s places that we and our dog have visited. Thank you Jill!
