The Experience

From the cottage you look out over the garden and lawns to a newly planted orchard of traditional Cumbrian apples – spring will be heralded with much blossom. There is room for all in the long, beamed sitting room with a large bay window at one end and the kitchen at the other with plenty of comfy seating in between. On rainy days this will be a lovely spot for sitting with a book in front of the wood-burner, planning your next outing.

The kitchen is sleek and geared for proper cooks with plenty of prepping space, a large electric and gas stove and an oven big enough for entertaining. You eat at a round table in the bay window and on summer days you can fling open the door and bring the outside in. A welcome hamper includes ground coffee, a bottle of wine and fresh flowers.

Amble to the local pub, The White Horse, for excellent food, stride the rolling hills, sleep peacefully in well-dressed beds with prettily tiled bathrooms.

We think you'll love

  • Walking the fells all day, breathing the freshest air, returning to such a light and comfortable space
  • Taking the other cottage for a big family gathering – there is a table big enough for 12 next door and plenty of pots and pans
  • Being able to walk in minutes to a good pub if you're too bushed to cook

Reviews

This is a very modern, brilliantly designed barn conversion. It provides an exceptional, comfortable place for a holiday. Easy to stay and relax in and a perfect position in the Lakes.

Location

The neighbourhood

The village is surrounded by farmland and woodlands for happy walks and cycles. Nearby is Orton which has a super farmers' market, and in Appleby, 15 mins, you'll find Low Howgill for a butchery and a deli. Tebay services is 20 minutes for superb local produce and a restaurant. Penrith is 15 mins, a market town with many outdoor shops; Ullswater is 15 mins for boat trips and watery fun.

Local points of interest from Caroline Addison

  • Dove Barn is located in the heart of Kings Meaburn, a small village close to the boundaries of both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks.
  • Excellent walks are found within the parish with the Lyvennet river flowing close by, whilst the many walks and hikes of the Lakeland Fells and Pennines lie just a short drive away.
  • As well as walking, there are also a multitude of other activities and outings for all the family... irrespective of the constraints of the Cumbrian weather.
  • There are many great pubs, cafés and restaurants in the local area, many of which utilise the great produce of the area in their food and drink offerings.
  • Going slightly further afield, you may also visit the Scottish Borders and Hadrian's Wall which can be reached within 45 minutes.
  • Dove Barn can be easily accessed from all major routes, north, south east and west. It's less than 10 miles from both the M6 and A66, as well as Penrith station which connects with the West Coast Mainline.

Introducing

Caroline Addison

Caroline and Chris live nearby and converted the barn themselves. They are very much part of the local community in King's Meaburn – their farming family have been here since the Vikings! Caroline is extremely informative about the conversion and also about local history. She has written a book on the village history.
