The Experience

Huge thought and care has gone into making every detail of your stay a delight: the renovation work was handled by Georgina Rose of Soho House fame and the generosity of spirit is down to the owners who live nearby in the Hall. The kitchen is a really convivial space and you’ll find a hamper of homemade cakes and biscuits, a freshly baked sourdough loaf, a jar of award-winning marmalade and a bottle of Prosecco waiting for you. If you prefer not to cater for yourselves the owners can give you the contact details of good local chefs.

A large sitting room with grand views overlooking the horses in the field and the fells beyond is a great space for a quiet read or to watch a film in front of the log-burner if it isn’t fine outdoors. Otherwise you’ll be in the garden with the firepit, barbecue and a lawn big enough to play games on.

Walk and cycle for miles, return to a home-cooked meal and restful sleep in beautiful bedrooms listening to owls hoot.

Our stay at Brownber House was beyond dreamy. Peter and Amanda are such kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable hosts and fantastic cooks! Arriving to a stocked larder, a beautifully prepared dinner and welcome hamper was just the best. The house itself is incredibly comfortable, stylish, and full of anything one could possibly need for a long relaxing holiday. The surrounding area is breathtakingly beautiful and very peaceful. Every morning I gasped looking out the window at the light on the Howgill Fells with ponies and sheep grazing in the foreground - so bucolic!

A very sunny, happy sort of house to spend time with friends or family and you can be as lazy as you like if you don't wish to cook. Explore gloriously quiet countryside by foot or bike, return to dark skies, peace and quiet and a barbecue round the firepit in summer, or by a roaring fire in the lovely living space in winter.

Location

The neighbourhood

Such a quiet part of Cumbria with fabulous walking (join the coast-to-coast path), great cycling (the lanes are quiet) and lots of opportunities for wild swimming. Kirkby Stephen is 7 miles for good independent shops and interesting old buildings with cobbled yards. The Black Swan is a decent pub in Ravonstonedale - just over a mile away. You're a short drive from the Lakes and the Dales.

Local points of interest from Peter & Amanda Jaques-Walker

  • We are within the newly extended Yorkshire Dales National Park, and well placed for day trips into the Lake District. We are just ten minutes from Junction 38 (Tebay) on the M6, making us the ideal stop off to break up long journeys.
  • We are a 2 mile walk from the village of Ravenstonedale, which boasts two cosy pubs, both serving excellent food.We overlook the Howgill Fells - the perfect place to go walking in splendid isolation, with only the wild fell ponies for company.
  • Two classic long distance footpaths - the Coast to Coast and Dales High Way - run right past Brownber Hall. If you don’t fancy dragging your spare clothes around, there are a number of bag carrying companies who can do the hard work for you!
  • Our favourite walk right from the front door (about a 2 hour round trip) is through the Smardale Gill Nature Reserve to the Smardale Gill Viaduct. This is a hidden treasure, tucked away in a secluded valley holding sights of historical interest.
  • Road cyclists can explore the network of quiet lanes surrounding the house, which lead to some fantastic routes and some more challenging climbs, such as Tan Hill or the Lakes & Dales Loop. We can provide safe storage for bikes in the basement.
  • We are one of the darkest sky areas in England, which provides great opportunities for star gazing – particularly on the fell behind the Hall. Rusty the red squirrel is a regular unofficial guest at Brownber Hall and likes to put on a good show

Introducing

Peter & Amanda Jaques-Walker

Peter and Amanda moved to Cumbria from London in 2016 and are young, friendly, knowledgeable and brilliant at hosting. They live in an apartment at Brownber, so always on hand if you need them at the House or Hall and only a few miles down the road if you're staying at Bullghyll, which is owned and designed by Amanda's sister, Georgina.
