The Experience
Askham is a dream, one of the loveliest houses in the Lakes. It’s a Grade I-listed manor house with a 12th-century peel tower, but grand as it is, Charlie grew up here and it retains the feel of home, making it a delightfully informal base. Expect contemporary art and open fires, a beautiful drawing room with an honesty bar, an outdoor pool, hot tub and sauna with gardens that are open to the public. The hall sits in 40 acres of prime Cumbrian grazing land with paths that follow a river into glorious parkland. It’s all part of the Lowther estate, where Charlie rears his own meat for Richard Swale’s Michelin star kitchen. The food (awarded 4 AA Rosettes) is out of this world, ambrosial stuff that makes you want to move in permanently. You might find Askham pork cheek and barbecued hock, rough fell lamb with wild garlic risotto, Yorkshire rhubarb tart with brown butter ice cream; a kitchen garden and two polytunnels provide much for the table. Chic bedrooms have a cool country-house style. Wander to their pub, the Queen’s Head, just a short walk away.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from The Lowther Family
- Askham Hall is situated in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, in the Eden Valley on the edge of the Lake District: an idyllic spot to visit.
- The owners have recently acquired the nearby 17th century Queen’s Head pub, as part of an innovative vision to create a health and wellbeing hub in the village. Offering six modern, spacious bedrooms and serving healthy, hearty meals.
- Askham Hall was the home of the Lowther family for over 200 years, after they moved from nearby Lowther castle in the 1930s. It is built up around a 12th-century Pele Tower, a defensive structure that defined the early architecture of the borderlands.
- Guests have access to a nearby 'Health Barn' offering a range or relaxation and therapeutic treatments, including a state of the art flotation tank, the only one of its kind in Cumbria.
- The Lowther family has five miles of private salmon and trout fishing along the idyllic River Eden. The family also has a beautiful stretch on the River Lowther, famous for its dry fly upstream brown trout, which guests are able to use with a permit.
- There are two beautiful churches nearby. St. Michaels's church, Lowther with its strong family connections is visible from the gardens at Askham Hall.

Introducing
The Lowther Family
The Lowther family own and run a trio of places to eat, drink and sleep in the Eden Valley, on the edge of the Lake District, called the Askham Collection. Charles, a committed custodian of the land, rears slow-grow breeds of beef, pork and lamb on the Lowther Estate that find their way onto the menu in each place. You're looked after by friendly, professional staff wherever you go.
