The Experience
Originally the Smithy for the Okel Tor Mining Company, this dear little house has been nicely renovated. You’re kept cosy with double glazing and a wood-burning stove, there is plenty of squishy seating and the tiny kitchen has some basics for cooking and all the kit you need to make supper. You’ll also find some local snacks waiting for you.
You can sit on the covered veranda to read a book even when it’s raining and the views are stupendous – early morning river mist will be romantic, and don’t forget binoculars as the birdlife is pretty spectacular too. The calming bedroom has a super-comfy bed and good linen and you can see that view through the window. Join public footpaths down through the woods to the river; a short walk will take you into the village or to a couple of pubs.
This is the place to come if you want to paint, write, enjoy nature and the river. Or simply to be alone with your beloved – and your dog.

The Smithy is exactly what you need when you have a break away. It is a lovely space for 2 people, beautifully decorated and furnished (a super comfortable bed!), in a wonderful setting. there is Cotehele within walking distance, Morwellham nearby, lots to do and see whether it's for a weekend or longer. We loved it and would strongly recommend others to go!

The Smithy, now a place of utter tranquillity and birdsong, was once a place of noise and industry and there are little decorative reminders of its mining heritage dotted all around it. The morning river mist and the ever-shifting seasonal panorama of the woodland are gentle on the eye and ear. Wind down in this cosy little cottage and from it, explore the quirky village of Calstock and beyond.

The Smithy a perfect bolthole, with extraordinary views of woodland, abandoned mine-workings, a sliver of river, and Devon beyond, and the sound of tawny owls calling to each other and geese in the wetlands below. Gird your loins for the last bit of the 'road' up there, but it's completely worth it once you're there. Jon and Jenny, despite only taking over 2 weeks before our visit, were delightful, generous hosts.

Wonderful place to stay-we regularly return and are booked again-this place feels like our ‘bolt-hole’. Beautifully situated cottages in a peaceful woodland setting. Ideal for dog walkers. Beautiful stretch of River Tamar to walk by. Cottages very clean and well appointed. A wonderful place to stay.

It just goes to prove that you can always trust Sawdays when looking for somewhere to holiday! Our stay was wonderful in lots of ways. Beautiful surroundings which are off the beaten track but a short walk to the delightful village of Calstock. A place to really relax and immerse yourselves in the tranquility of a cosy cottage and the local area. We stayed in a heat wave but are looking forward to our stay in December, keeping warm around the log burner! We fell in love with it and highly recommend.

The Smithy has been very thoughtfully and affectionately restored to become an unusual and unique holiday experience. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, yet easily accessible to all towns and places of interest. The tranquility is inspiring and soul rejuvenating leaving those that visit feeling fresh and cognitively revitalised. We have visited in the months of January and March, finding both experiences unique but equally breathtaking.

The Smithy proved to be entirely suited to our needs being very comfortable and fully equipped. The location is perfect - close enough to the village (which boasts good pubs) to enjoy the walk but remote enough to be tranquil. Exploring the old mine workings with interesting walks around the site was a bonus. We have already booked a return visit next year.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're on the outskirts (a 15 to 20-minute walk) from the quirky, picturesque, riverside village of Calstock. The village has pubs, a café, a small art gallery/shop, an amazing ice cream shop and an active village community. The river is focal to the village and there are boat trips up and down the Tamar to Plymouth. The Boot Inn and The Tamar Inn are less than a mile away from the cottage.
Local points of interest from Jon & Jenny Tully
- The National Trust's Cotehele is a short walk along the river - a medieval house with gardens spilling down to an historic quay where you can enjoy a cream tea or ice cream with your dog! There are also many estate walks.
- Morwellham Quay historic port & copper mine featured on the BBC's Edwardian Farm. Learn how the Victorians used to make rope & venture underground on the narrow gauge railway into The George & Charlotte mine.
- Explore the charming villages and mining heritage along the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail. Take a train on the Tamar Valley branch line to explore the historic Barbican & Hoe in Plymouth & catch the ferry back to Calstock.
- Visit the market town of Tavistock with interesting independent shops & lively farmers' market. Drive up to Kit Hill for amazing far-reaching views to Plymouth Sound or explore the tors on Dartmoor followed by a bite to eat.
- Join Canoe Tamar for a leisurely guided tour up the river in a Canadian canoe. Spot a kingfisher, an otter or if you're lucky a seal! For the more energetic hire a mountain bike & explore the Tamar Trails.
- Whitsand Bay is a short drive away - explore the coastal footpath & former fishing villages of Kingsand & Cawsand & visit Rame Head. Trebarwith Strand on the dramatic North coast is ideal for surfing.

Introducing
Jon & Jenny Tully
Friendly and engaging Jon and Jenny, both with a services background and a passion for the great outdoors, bought the site as a going concern in 2023. They live in another building nearby and will let you get on with your holiday unless you need anything.
You can give only 5 stars to the Smithy and to Jon. He gave us a very warm welcome and from the very first minute we felt comfortable. We loved to have breakfast on the terrace and enjoyed the panoramic view you will never forget. We appreciate Jon' s recommendations for shops with Cornish products and had the best dinner in The Cornish Arms. It was even a pleasure to spend the only rainy day in the Smithy, with a cup of Cornish coffee on the sheltered terrace in the afternoon and reading a book in the evening while the fireplace kept you warm.
