The Experience

A bumpy track over cattle grids takes you to this remote, charming cottage and barn sitting huddled together all alone. Inside is cosy, characterful and quirky with plenty of space for everybody – even a ‘west wing’ should you come as a larger party.

You’ll find unlimited wood for the stoves, and kids will love the table tennis, table football and darts in the adjoining barn. A boot room is perfect for stashing damp walking stuff and there’s a laundry room too. Granite steps leading up to the barn are the ideal place for a sunset drink and no light pollution means on a clear night you’ll see plenty of stars.

You’re in the middle of Bodmin Moor so get on your bikes or explore on foot. Find ancient granite tors, Bronze Age sites, and Daphne Du Maurier’s atmospheric Jamaica Inn. Pack up a picnic and head for the gentle beaches in the south or the wild north coast for a day out.

Reviews

Only positive feedback, it is really refreshing to stay somewhere on holiday that feels like a real home, warm, comfortable and in the most fabulous location. The cottage has been beautifully restored in keeping with Cornish traditions.

It was amazing Thankyou, my review is what an amazing cottage! It has everything you need and owners were very helpful, me and my dogs really enjoyed the long walks around the fields and loved seeing all the animals, the cottage has everything you could think of from games room, to board games and books to keep you entertained...I loved being able to sit in front of a cosy fire and relax in the evening and I have recommended this cottage to my family..the location is amazing and I will definitely be booking again in the future! Thankyou again I really enjoyed my stay , Anna

South Priddacombe was the perfect location to see in the new year. Cosy and warm with beautiful walks and plenty of days out locally. We particularly enjoyed visiting Fowey again. Many thanks Alcina, we felt very blessed to start the new year in your lovely home.

This cottage at Christmas is absolutely perfect. ..We were 5 adults and 2 medium sized dogs and there was plenty of room for everyone. Loads of useful spaces for storage and wet dogs. The weather was absolutely atrocious sadly but with both fires going it was so warm, cozy and christmassy. We all absolutely loved our four day stay and would definitely look to book again in the summer to actually be able to see the moors situated literally outside the door. Much too wet and misty to see anything this time sadly.

The cottage was even more outstanding than the photos suggested - beautifully designed interior and wonderful walks and views. Alcina was also incredibly generous in re-arranging dates at the last minute.

This cottage was so perfect. The most idyllic surroundings, so peaceful and cosy. Great place to get away from it all. We felt absolutely at home here. We very much enjoyed the ping pong table, the wood burners, comfy beds, the lovely smell our clothes had when it was fine out and we could hang them on the line. So many animals- a visit in spring can’t be beat- lambs, bunnies, baby birds of all sorts, calves, colts- and their lovely parents as well 😉. Would absolutely love to return here in the future! Highly recommend!

We had a wonderful stay at South Priddacombe. We instantly felt at home, the house has a peaceful homely feel, and a real sense of history. It was warm and cosy, but plenty of space too. Lovely bedrooms and comfy beds. Beautiful wide views of the moors. Very well appointed,, and well cared for. We only had a few days, and wished we had booked longer, will definite be returning for a week or two. The owner is very helpful, with any questions and queries.

A wonderfully welcoming cottage in a secluded and peaceful part of Bodmin moor. South Priddacombe has the look and feel of a remote hideaway yet the rugged north coast, interesting towns and excellent pubs are within a half hour drive, and all of Bodmin moor is on the doorstep. The cottage has been beautifully restored and furnished, with plenty of room and entertainment for everyone to enjoy, whatever the weather.

Location

The neighbourhood

The cottage has no close neighbours – the only person you might see is Glenn who farms some of the surrounding land, always happy to stop and chat. The Rising Sun at Alternun is a ten-minute drive and you can be on the north or south coast in 45 minutes. Stock up in Launceston or Bodmin just ten minutes away. Fans of surf and sunsets should head to Polzeath, 22 miles west.

Local points of interest from Alcina Ward

  • Walk straight from the back door to Cornwall's highest points - Roughtor and Brown Willy. Feel slightly smug that everyone else has driven to the carpark. Pro tip: take a bottle of fizz for the top.
  • Beaches north and south are within a 30 minute drive: take your pick based on weather, tides and preferred remoteness. Will it be a scramble down to Great Lantic Bay in the south, popping up on your surfboard at Polzeath, or a bowl of mussels at Polkerris?
  • Lovely pubs. Walk across the moor for Sunday roast at St Breward Churchtown, or to the renowned Rising Sun at Altarnun. Stop on the way back from the coast at Blisland Inn to sample their own Blisland Bulldog ale overlooking the village green.
  • Brunch at the magnificent Duchy Nursery; work it off with a walk across the valley to Restormel Castle (English Heritage); finish off with a tea in Lostwithiel nearby, browsing the antique shops.
  • Explore the south of the moor: take a woodland walk at the magical Golitha Falls, treating yourself to BBQ lunch at Inkie's Smokehouse, then explore the ancient and mysterious stone circles at Minions.
  • Hire bikes at Lanhydrock (National Trust) and explore their offroad trails; or pick up the Camel Cycle trail at Bodmin and pedal to the coast for Rick Stein's fish and chips at Padstow.

Introducing

Alcina Ward

Alcina’s parents bought this cottage in 1991, and its character owes a lot to their careful award-winning restoration. While the family doesn’t live locally, three generations still enjoy their visits here. You’re looked after by lovely housekeeper Maureen, who will call on the evening you arrive to make sure everything is ok, and can pop over if you need help with anything during your stay.
