The Experience

Play boules in the shared gardens, gleaming with gunnera, banana palms and tree ferns. Retreat to your private patch, fenced, gated and furnished with a barbecue and outdoor seating. All you hear is birdsong and the rustling of leaves.

This charming stone granary is the middle one of three outbuildings on an 18th-century farm, revived and designed in rustic-chic style. The best of mid-century pieces blend with reclaimed wood, slate and linen, and all feels airy yet cosy. Snuggle up with a book by the wood-burner, chat as you chop in the kitchen; the table seats ten plus a few children, in case you come as a group.

Body boards and beach toys are there to borrow, so set off for the beach at Perranuthnoe, two and a half miles down the road. There’s a fantastic farm shop on the way, fabulous food at the Victoria Inn and all the local pubs welcome children.

Reviews

We had a wonderful holiday staying in The Granary, 3 adults and 1 dog. The gated garden was ideal for the dog and there was an outdoor house, also great for the dog. Lots of thoughtful touches around the house which made it a very easy and comfortable place to stay. The area suited lots of interests from art galleries, ancient settlements, long sandy beaches, rugged coastline, interesting streets and shops in Penanze and much more. The Granary had excellent wifi. The downstairs bedrooms are small and the ceilings low but this didn't bother us.

Eleanor, Bristol

Had a lovely and relaxing stay in Carters Croft, Middle Colenso Farm in Cornwall. The cottage is beautifully furnished and very well equipped. The owners have obviously gone to great lengths to ensure that guests have a very comfortable stay. This was an area of Cornwall that we have not stayed in prior to this visit. There is so much to do and the scenery is stunning. We definitely hope to return and explore more of the region. Middle Colenso will be our first choice for accommodation.

Maggie, Lincoln

This is our second stay at Middle Colenso Farm, and we know it's the sort of place we'll always come back to. Cream tea on arrival, amazing interiors, beautiful gardens and more - it's impossible not to feel relaxed here. You're perfectly situated to explore Mousehole, Newlyn, Praa Sands and even up to Gwithian Beach. It really is the best!

Ella, Bristol

We loved everything about our stay at The Old Granary: its knock-your-socks-off style, the gardens that make you feel like you’re in another country, and personal touches including scones and homemade jam welcoming you. Everything Chris and Christen recommended was spot on too - from pasties and pubs to paddle boarding locations. Our only regret was not being able to stay longer.

Loren, Bath

As soon as I arrived here I felt peaceful and calmed. The cottage is easy to find and parking is great, the cottage itself is surrounded by beautiful, well kept gardens and trees, all you can hear is bird song and rustling leaves. With beautifully designed and furnished interiors, this is really somewhere to relax and recharge.

Location

The neighbourhood

Your closest pub is the Falmouth Packet a mile up the road - with a brilliant fish and chip shop opposite. Little Perranuthnoe (2.5 miles) has craft shops, cafes, a big sandy beach, and the lovely Victoria Inn. Praa Sands, 2 miles, lies in the opposite direction, with a beach café and a surf school. The area is a foodie haven, from Ben's Cornish Kitchen in Marazion (4 miles) to Rick Stein’s seafood in Porthleven (6 miles).

Local points of interest from Christen Pears

  • Explore the historic market town of Marazion and iconic St Michael's Mount which are just a short drive away.
  • Take a stroll down Penzance’s historic Chapel Street with its fascinating architecture, excellent shops and pubs. The iconic Art Deco Jubilee Pool is close by as is the fascinating Penlee House Gallery and Museum.
  • Head over to the bustling former fishing town of St Ives, now an artistic hub and home to an offshoot of the Tate Gallery and the wonderful Barbara Hepworth Sculpture Garden. Don't miss the Leach Pottery on the outskirts of town.
  • Once the centre of one of Cornwall's greatest mining estates, nearby Godolphin is a truly magical place. Once you've explored the estate make the short walk up Godolphin Hill where, on a clear day, you can see both coasts.
  • Put on your walking boots and get out and about on the South West Coast Path. Some of our favourite walks include the nearby stretch between Prussia Cove and Perranuthnoe and the spectacular route between Zennor and the Gurnard's Head.
  • Take in a play at the Minack Theatre, carved out of the rocks above Porthcurno Beach.
