The Experience

Merlin Farm is a real family affair: Darrel designed it, Lucy runs it; Darrel’s late father David painted the seascape canvases in the cottages. You feel away from it all here in this serene spot, yet the central location makes it ideal for exploring the rest of Cornwall.

Anyone who still holds on to the idea that ‘eco’ and ‘green’ are synonymous with a hair-shirt approach to life has not had the good fortune to stay here. Wondrously transformed from derelict barns, these stunning loft-like ‘cottages’, divided for privacy by high willow fences, are kitted out with the best of everything and completed with the lightest of impacts.

Energy is generated by the farm using solar panels, geothermal and underfloor heating. There are five beaches within five miles and wonderful dark skies at night.

Reviews

We have stayed at Merlin Farm Cottages on several occasions, most recently in June. The quality of the accommodation, rural views, closeness to Mawgan Porth facilties and beach bring us back. The cottages are a good size, comfortable, light and airy with stylish furniture and everything you need for your stay. The location is very peaceful, away from traffic and only a 10-15 minute walk to the beach and coast path. There are many places to explore within an easy distance... Lucy and Darrel are and have always been welcoming and extremely helpful.

What an amazing location. We stayed for a week with our 6 month old baby and had a wonderful time (despite being sleep deprived!)....We loved the walk to the beach, it's around 20mins or so through beautiful woodland. The beach was stunning although full of dogs!! We ate at 'Catch' which was delightful and also drove to Watergate Bay to eat at The Beach Hut which was epic!! A thank you to our hosts who respected our privacy but were friendly, approachable and on hand when ever required.

Such a lovely spot with all of Cornwall on your doorstep. Cottages are walking distance from beach and restaurants - there's plenty to do and see here. In summertime, after a day at the beach, open up the glass doors and sit in your private courtyard, taking in the countryside. In winters, cosy up on a comfy sofa by the wood-burner after wild walks on the coast. High-end eco-comfort.

Peaceful retreat First class accommodation top quality fittings and fixtures, quite peaceful and Secluded yet just ten minutes to the main part of Mawgan Porth and beach, lovely walks. We have stayed here for many years and really like it, the owners are lovely, nothing too much trouble

Excellent as always! Merlin farm cottages are fabulous. Very comfortable accommodation in a fantastic location. Lucy and Darrel maintain the property to a very high standard with great attention to the details that make a stay so perfect. We will soon be back!

We walked in and said WOW! What a beautiful place with so many thoughtful touches. Such a toasty place that had space but felt so cosy. A great location near a beautiful beach and little restaurants. It was definitely a wonderful stay and completely relaxing. Loved the eco friendly living definitely up my street

My fiance and our dog had a great week at Merlin Farm at the beginning of November. Very peaceful surroundings. Lovely walk down to the centre of Mawgan Porth through the forest. Facilities in the cottage were great we had everything we needed for a cosy relaxing break.

We shared this gem with our family recently staying in Haryln and Porthcothan. Beautiful eco cottages equipped to meet everyone's needs. The usual high standards of cleanliness, facilities and a perfect location, within easy access to so many local dog friendly beaches. One of the key benefits is being able to walk to the beach safely through the woodland path. My family have booked a return visit to experience Merlin Farm in the summer.

We stayed in Constantine cottage which was fantastic, even better than the pictures and a really peaceful location. Spacious, warm, very clean, great amenities & a beautiful view. Luxurious with great bathroom, lovely hot shower and comfy huge sofa with a lovely woodburner. Only a 10 minute walk to the beach & really easy to get to anywhere in Cornwall. The service from the owners and communication were exceptional - very covid safe & lots of info & tips which were genuinely really helpful and they made us feel very welcome. Would definitely come back to the same cottage if in the area again.

Merlin Farm is a hidden gem. It is a short (15 minute) woodland walk to Mawgan Porth beach which is a large expanse of fine sand. There you will find a restaurant, coffee bars, surf hire and a very well stocked local shop where you can get most things you'll need and the produce is of high quality. The accommodation (we stayed in Constantine) is delightful. There are lovely views over fields. It is very well fitted out and furnished to a high standard. Bi-fold doors let you bring the outside in and for the cooler evenings there is a log burner to complement the underfloor heating.

Wonderful place yet again. I just came back from a lovely Mon-Fri break in Harlyn eco cottage. It was peaceful, beautiful and calm, just what I wanted for a few days break with my old dog Alfie. I love staying there to really have time at the beach and to relax. Lucy and her husband are great hosts. The cottages are stunning. This was my second time staying and I am going back again. From the cottages you can see all manner of animals and birds of prey. It is just wonderful...This place really does have a piece of my heart. Highly recommended.

A luxury eco cottage perfect for families with small children. We loved it. Perfect location, fully equipped and couldn’t have asked for more for a relaxing break for all the family. Thank you

Alison, Northwich

Just returned from a week staying in the Daymer as a solo trip. The weather was dreadful in the main but the studio and welcome couldn’t be faulted. It was quiet with lovely views over the fields and hills but an easy distance from Mawgan Porth and the beach. Everything I needed was supplied and it was warm and cosy - much needed with the rain and gales. Quite atmospheric at night! Lucy went above and beyond as I left something I needed for work the next week and she kindly sent me photos of the information I needed! I hope I’m able to return when it’s a bit warmer but thank you Lucy and Darre

Steph, Bromsgrove

We had a fantastic holiday here, I don't think I could have improved it. We stayed in a beautiful cottage that was perfect for our 2 year old and 10 month old. It was all on one level with an enclosed garden which gave us complete peace of mind. The walk to the beach isn't too long and Mawgan Porth itself is a gorgeous beach and it has everything you need without being too big. The owners are very friendly and we really appreciated the small touches like donkey grooming for the little ones, a small play area and fresh eggs. Will definitely come again.

This place will make your heart sing. Stunning views, a path through woods on a short walk to the beach or to the pub in St Mawgan (or both). Merlin is a family farm and the hosts are genuinely welcoming, going out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Our cottage for 2 (Daymer Studio) was superb - wood burner, wooden/Cornish slate floors and high quality furnishings. We went for 2 weeks in December for rest and recuperation. Can't recommend it highly enough. We plan to return in 2014.

The neighbourhood

The cottages sit side by side overlooking the Vale of Lanherne (lots of walks) and fields where the ponies live. The farm is brilliantly tucked away, though the nearest shops are just a quarter of a mile’s ramble from the front door. The walk to Mawgan Porth beach is very manageable, even with tots in tow, or hop in the car and it’s a mere 10 minute-drive to Watergate Bay.

Introducing

Lucy Wheeler

The Wheelers moved to Merlin Farm as a family in 2003; the eco cottages came along six years later. Architect Darrel designed the loft-like buildings and wife Lucy runs the show. Passionate about leaving as little an impact on the environment as possible, the duo devised all the green features and even generate their own electricity – get them talking about all things eco (or where to find the best cream tea), or text for recommendations.
