The Experience

Artist Residence’s Cornish offering is another cool bolthole from Justin and Charlie Salisbury. The vibe is laid-back: friendly staff stop to chat and you can turn up to dinner in your flip-flops.

Choose where to eat – in the Clubhouse adorned with colourful pop art, in front of the wood-burner in the sitting room-bar or outside in the terrace garden. There’s ping pong to play while you wait for dinner.

Breakfast on French toast, local eggs and homemade granola before you whisk yourself off to St Michael’s Mount, glimpsed from the hotel, or the Jubilee Pool lido. There’s great surfing at Sennen and paddling at Porthcurno, both ten miles, and you can catch the ferry to the Isles of Scilly direct from Penzance.

Reviews

This is a lovely hotel in the heart of Penzance but set back from the hustle and bustle. The bar and restaurant serve delicious food, the rooms are comfortable and quirky - we even had the most gorgeous view of the harbour from our window. Heavenly.

Ella, Bristol

Thoroughly enjoyable 1 night stay in Penzance in this quirky, vintage style boutique hotel. Hip decor inside and out. The Breakfast Granola was simply delicious! If I wanted to be picky, I would recommend change in coffee selection as found it bitter. Friendly and helpful staff! Nice choice of Happy hour cocktails too. Thanks and we will definitely be back !

Location

The neighbourhood

Penzance has its own micro-climate: palm trees sway and lush sub-tropical gardens thrive while St Michael’s Mount shimmers in the distance. There are heaps of cafes and independent shops to spend time in and you can join the South West Coast Path to Mousehole and Lamorna Cove – or press on towards St Ives. A ferry can take you to the Scilly Isles, or find a beach to suit you here – from gentle paddling to wild surfing.

Local points of interest from Charlie & Justin Salisbury

  • Newlyn is a town and fishing port neighbouring Penzance. Newlyn is a popular holiday destination, with many pubs and restaurants. Be sure to check out Newlyn art gallery when visiting the town!
  • The Eden Project is a beautiful attraction in Cornwall. Inside the artificial biodomes are plants that are collected from all around the world and it's just perfect for a great day out for the whole family!
  • St Ives is a very charming and scenic town. A picturesque mix of fishermen’s cottages and narrow winding streets with arty, crafty shops, cafés and boutiques. It's also home to The Tate Gallery St Ives!
  • The Geevor Tim mine tells the story of tin mining in Cornwall and Geevor in particular, showing what happened on the surface and underground and what life was like for those who worked there. Perfect for a day out exploring Cornwall.
  • Perhaps one of the most well-known historical buildings in Cornwall, describing St Michael’s Mount as a castle is selling the gem quite a bit short. It is set on a rocky island across the water from Marazion and truly a sight to behold!
  • Porthcurno Beach is a Popular family beach with lots of soft sand. Steeply shelving beach attracts more experienced swimmers. The stream at the top of the beach is ideal for children paddling! Close to Minack Theatre and Telegraphy Museum.

Introducing

Charlie & Justin Salisbury

Justin Salisbury started his small boutique chain almost by accident when he took over his parents' run down guesthouse in Brighton when he was just 20. He did that place up on a shoestring by inviting local artists to decorate the rooms in return for a free stay. This turned out to be his winning formula and together with his wife Charlie they now have several Artist Residences.
