The Experience
Backwood Hall dates from 1840 and is in the heart of a 300-acre estate with uninterrupted views of the Dee Estuary and the hills of North Wales. While it feels quiet and secluded you’re not remote; Chester, Liverpool and Manchester are in easy driving distance.
Sandra and Jim are keen for their guests to love staying here. Open fires in the dining room and sitting room keep things cosy, or if it’s sunny you can have a picnic on the rolling lawns in front of the house or play tennis – there’s stabling for horses too.
You can cook together and eat at the large kitchen table or the formal dining room or walk 15 minutes to the Boat House in Parkgate RSPB Nature Reserve to watch wildlife activity on the marshland while you eat. The lovely coastal town of Parkgate is a 20-minute walk mostly through the estate, and you can stock up at Heswall, a ten-minute drive away.

Location
The neighbourhood
The Hall lies on the edge of Parkgate, the only coastal resort in Cheshire. Constant silting of the Dee over the centuries has led to Parkgate losing its position as a port, but it was very popular in its heyday. From the Hall, you have direct access to the Wirral Way Coastal Path, which runs just over 12 miles along a disused railway line. The lovely Ness Botanical Gardens are a ten-minute drive, as is The Red Fox pub at Thornton Hough, which has open fires and lots of character. Chester and Liverpool are half an hour away and Manchester is a little over an hour.
Local points of interest from Sandra Harris
- Explore historical Parkgate, a short stroll from the farm. Once a thriving sea port where Lord Nelson had meetings with Lady Hamilton prior to sailing to Ireland.A jumble of Georgian buildings now housing many excellent pubs and restaurants.
- The salt marsh bordering the farm is now an RSPB nature reserve, attracting twitchers from far and wide. So bring your binoculars and cameras! Or get on the water at West Kirby's Marine Lake. Great for dinghy or wind surfer. Courses available.
- For the more active, the Wirral Way can be reached directly from the farm. You can walk or cycle along it or ride on the adjoining bridleway for miles in either direction. So bring your bicycle or even your horse. Full livery is available on site.
- Fancy a game of tennis on our court, overlooking the Dee Estuary. Or golf? With over 10 courses, the Wirral is a mecca for golfing. Heswall golf course adjoins the farm and nearby is Royal Liverpool at Hoylake, venue for the 2014 Open Championship.
- Within easy driving distance are, Ness Botanical Gardens, Liverpool's magnificent waterfront (a world heritage site), the historic walled city of Chester and Snowdonia National Park. Or for shopaholics, Cheshire Oaks and Liverpool One.
- Simply chill out in the peaceful luxury of the Wing.

Introducing
Sandra Harris
Sandra and Jim live in the West Wing of the Hall with their two friendly little dogs and rescue cats. The Hall was originally bought by Jim's father, and using Sandra's interior design skills – she owned an interior design shop in the centre of Chester for many years – they decided to embark on a fresh direction. They transformed two farm buildings into cosy holiday cottages before turning their attention to the East Wing of the Hall.
The perfect place to completely unwind. The East Wing is spacious, but has a warm, cosy feel and the thought of lighting the log fire in the sitting room and curling up on the sofa is extremely enticing. Very homely, despite the splendid plasterwork and panelled doors. By contrast, in a more energetic frame of mind, walking out on a sunny morning to explore the Wirral Way, before heading back for a meal at one of Parkgate's restaurants or pubs has its appeal, too. Luxurious interiors, glorious views, and so much to see and do. Hard to beat, really.
