The Three Hills

Originally opened as an alehouse in 1847 this rural inn has been bought and refurbished with aplomb. It’s the only pub in this tiny village of just over a hundred souls and doubles up as the village hall, the library and all-round buzzing hub. Food is taken seriously: classic British with a twist and sourced locally as much as possible – touchingly there is also a discount for the villagers.

There’s a warm buzz inside with muddy-booted walkers, lycra-clad cyclists and families with children who spill outside to the pretty garden on warm days – there’s a pizza oven and barbecue in the garden for the summer months. Find a cosy spot by the roaring fire and choose a book from the library, eat in the light and airy Orangery overlooking the terrace, retreat to bedrooms (two upstairs) with soft wool throws and fresh flowers.

It’s great walking and cycling country so you can set off straight from the village but you’re a short hop in the car from Cambridge, Ely and Newmarket for culture, cathedral and shopping.
