The Experience

The estate is totally private with the house backing onto woodland, so you can walk from the door looking out for birds, deer and many butterflies in spring and summer. You have your own large garden with barbecue, a patio with table and chairs and a communal green with a pavilion (shared with other holiday properties) at the front for cricket, rounders and football.

The kitchen is large and you’re left a hamper with fresh eggs from a local farm and dry cured bacon and sausages from Seven Wells Butcher in Oundle. Peaceful bedrooms upstairs are large and comfortable, full of interesting artwork and with lovely views. For rainy days you’ll find books and games, but these can all be taken to the huts on the Woodland Walk too – some for quiet reading, others for craft or yoga.

It’s one mile to Ashton village for a pint at The Chequered Skipper.

Location

The neighbourhood

Apart from all the walks, you can try your hand at clay pigeon shooting on the estate - book in advance. It’s three miles to Oundle Wharf and another pub with a view over the river Nene. Here you'll also find shops, a brewery and Hambleton Bakery. Walk along the river, kayak, canoe, or hurl yourselves into Nene Extreme Adventures. Lutton Farm shop (open May to October) has amazing strawberries.

Local points of interest from Carol Maibaum

  • Oundle (4 Miles), surrounded on three sides by the River Nene, is a beautiful stone built market town. The town centre has many stone houses over 300 years old, divided by narrow alleys and courtyards.
  • The Chequered Skipper in Ashton Village is a picturesque thatched country pub. About 1 1/2 Mile walk.
  • With a variety of habitats including wildflower meadows, woodlands and wetlands, the Nene Valley is one of the most important inland areas for wildlife in England. Great way to explore. Hire a canoe in Oundle!
  • Rutland Water. An internationally famous nature reserve. Ideal family day out - cycling, wildlife and adventure.
  • Tap & Kitchen is a waterside restaurant and bar at Oundle Wharf. Great atmosphere . Ingredients sourced locally. Bar showcases beer from their sister and neighbour Nene Valley Brewery.
  • Stamford is idyllic enough to have formed the backdrop for television costume dramas such as Middlemarch and Pride & Prejudice. Independant traders create the perfect shopping experience.
