The Experience

You get robes and slippers so it will be easy to just hop over the road for a swim, steam, breakfast, lunch and supper. There’s no sitting room in the townhouse but you’re welcome to use the downstairs area at the Lido for a read, to work, or just to gaze at the swimmers. Food is Mediterranean-inspired using fresh local produce, tapas is popular and the smarter upstairs restaurant needs to be booked.

Back at your base, bedrooms are a good size and all have a peaceful feel with muted tones, artwork by local artists or members, very comfortable handmade beds and fine linens; shower rooms have Lido shampoo and lotions. It’s a 15-minute walk to Clifton Village for shops, cafés and the iconic bridge.

Breakfast (not included) on homemade granola, yogurt, hot options like hake, shakshuka and French toast and their own blend of coffee. It’s a lively, buzzing space to eat and the house is a super place to spend a few days while exploring the local area.

Reviews

Enjoy the tranquillity of the beautifully renovated townhouse whilst staying in the heart of such a vibrant city. The bedrooms are an extension of the Lido, calming and oh so comfortable. Be sure to make use of the Lido and seasonally inspired restaurant just a stone's throw away.

Location

The neighbourhood

You could easily come without a car. From Temple Meads you can catch a little train to Clifton Down, a 10-minute walk. For green space walk up to the Downs – a large area high on a hill for lovely views, picnics and walks. Stroll to Clifton Village for bars, shops and restaurants, then cross the suspension bridge for hikes through Leigh Woods, an Iron Age fort and stunning views of the Avon Gorge.

Local points of interest from Georgia Gutbezahl

  • Lido Townhouse is close to landmarks such as the Suspension Bridge and the Clifton Observatory. Clifton Promenade is especially beautiful with its big trees in fall colors during Autumn.
  • Head to Brandon Hill and climb the Cabot Tower for a panoramic view of the city. Across the Clifton Bridge you can visit Ashton Court. You can see deer, enjoy a coffee at the manor house café, or try the new adventure at the Tree Tops.
  • Try the new Italian restaurant Pazzo for an authentic Italian lunch. If you're in the mood for fresh handmade pasta, Little Hollows Pasta is a great choice. Be sure to book in advance.
  • Enjoy a leisurely walk along the water at Spike Island, taking in the views over Clifton Wood and the boats.
  • Wander down Cotham Hill, a pedestrian-friendly road with a variety of restaurants to choose from for dinner. End your day with the best gelato in town at Panunzio’s.
  • Lastly of course the discounted access to the Lido spa and restaurant!

Introducing

Georgia Gutbezahl

Arne bought the Lido in 2006. The original swimming baths opened its doors in 1850 and finally closed in 1990, only to languish unloved until Arne came along. They also have a Lido in Reading, equally gorgeous. Your point of contact is the efficient and very friendly Georgia, Townhouse Manager.
