The Experience

A sweet pea and lavender-clad pergola leads to your barn, with its own kitchen if you don’t want to go out. Carmel and David give you a fresh bedroom with tip-top linen and cheerful bedspread on a seriously comfy bed; they have an interesting library that you’re welcome to browse too. Breakfast is a moveable feast – have a basket delivered to you, or wander over to the main house and tuck into locally sourced everything with homemade marmalade and jams. Masses to do nearby – gardens, cycling, rowing on the river Ouse, walks on the Greensand Ridge. Return to explore the pretty cottage garden, and then curl up with a book on the sofa in your room.

Reviews

Hosts very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Clean, well equipped, comfortable accommodation for a summer weekend stay. Delicious breakfasts. Pretty village location close to larger towns and main roads for ease of access.

David, Guildford

Carmel & David are great hosts & knowledgeable about the surrounding area. The barn is very comfortable, spotlessly clean & fully equipped. The breakfasts were cooked to perfection. So, we highly recommend a stay at Forge Cottage Barn.

Katie, Bristol

I’ve tried a few times to stay here but it is a measure of the place which made it difficult as it is so popular. The Forge is comfortable and clean, charming and a great size for two, Carmel and David are very welcoming ,accommodating and friendly and make a great breakfast to set you up for the day. The location suits us as is is near to my relatives but also situated in a lovely village with two pubs in easy reach and very quiet . Highly recommend the Forge

Denis, Sale, greater Manchester

Tea and scones on arrival lovely accommodation and great cooked breakfast. Most welcoming hosts David and Carmel. We will definitely stay again,

Paul, London

Carmel and David were excellent hosts. The property was very comfortable and extremely well fitted out. We were made very welcome and given refreshments on arrival. We only gave nine out of ten as there was very intermittent Wi-Fi. But we appreciate this may be a benefit for some but not for us on this occasion. Overall we would highly recommend a stay here.

Roger, Southampton

Forge Cottage Barn is a beautiful place to stay. It is clean and well equipped with excellent soft furnishings and all the equipment you could possibly need. It is set in the garden of the cottage which is beautifully kept and has a small stream running through it. It is peaceful and comfortable.

Jen, Nottingham

Great comfortable accommodation with all amenities, location was good, lovely breakfast and wonderful hosts, thanks again for a fabulous stay

Sean, Taunton

Lovely place to stay, clean, comfortable with all amenities and such a really nice host. Breakfast was top notch, we would definitely stay again 5 stars!!!

Sean, Taunton

Such a fantastic stay at Forge Cottage! Carmel is absolutely the best host. From our arrival in the morning (taking in our bags before our wedding) to preparing everything in our room after our reception, it was absolutely faultless. And she even made us blueberry pancakes after I requested them as a small wedding present for my wife, she was so accommodating and food was so delicious! We highly we recommend a stay at Forge Cottage!

Sean, Bedford

My stay at Forge Cottage was extremely comfortable. The barn is well equipped and peaceful with a pretty garden space to relax in. Carmel and David are most kind and welcoming and cannot do enough to help you have a great stay. The breakfast is delicious and caters for all tastes. I thoroughly recommend staying here.

A lovely relaxing stay when attending a training course nearby while my husband explore the area. Carmel and David were warm and friendly hosts, full of useful recommendations for places to visit and helpful in everyway. The bed was extremely comfortable, as was the cosy barn accommodation and it was delightful to look out onto the beautiful garden. Highly recommended.

Carol, Cambridge

Carmel and David were so friendly and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble and we enjoyed a wonderful stay in the cosy well equipped accommodation. Free car parking and excellent WiFi. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone wishing to stay in the area.

Peter, Northampton

We only stayed one night but Carmel and David were the perfect hosts. A warm welcome and really lovely accommodation for the two of us and our two border terriers. A beautiful garden and a short walk to the pub where we had a delicious meal and very efficient service. Breakfast was delicious. We highly recommend and hopefully will return for a longer stay. Thank you to the Goldings.

Susan, Wetherby

We had a very relaxing stay at Forge Cottage where Carmel and David gave us a warm welcome and delicious breakfasts in their delightful home. We had never visited the area before and their recommendations were very helpful - discovering nearby Wrest Park was an added bonus. Our accommodation was surprisingly spacious with plenty of room to relax, an extremely comfortable bed and well equipped kitchen. We had a good meal at a local pub which Carmel helpfully booked for us and made good use of the Coop both of which were within walking distance. We highly recommend a stay if visiting the area.

Claire, Romsey

We spent a lovely four days in Forge Cottage. Our hosts could not have been kinder or more helpful. The cottage is delightful, full of character and has everything one could need for one’s comfort. Especially important, the bed is excellent. The setting in a lovely garden was very peaceful. Last not least - the breakfasts were very good as well.

Carol, London

The end of a 3 week holiday in the UK and without doubt the accommodation hi light. Beautiful, spacious and modern little home away from home in the gorgeous garden of a picturesque Elizabethan thatched cottage. The full breakfasts were outstanding and reading and relaxing in the garden in the evening a real treat. Two different gastro pubs a short walk away were particularly good. Two very experienced travellers recommend this stay highly.

Patricia, Melbourne

The most perfect place to stay for a weekend away in a very attractive area. David and Carmel are outstanding hosts. Incredible breakfast. Forge Barn Cottage is beautifully done and very peaceful. Lovely garden. Decent pub two minutes walk and Ampthill has much to offer and style. Would love to have stayed longer. Highly recommended, very highly recommended.

Guy, London

We were just looking for somewhere pleasant to stay for a night before and after an overseas trip from Luton Airport, and so not in the most relaxed frame of mind for our two short stays. However, we quickly saw the appeal of spending more time here. Carmel and David are charming and attentive - whilst providing an excellent breakfast - while the Barn is quite separate and most comfortable, with a very attractive setting. We would unhesitatingly recommend Forge Cottage Barn as a destination in its own right.

Roger, York

Carmel and David are charming hosts. On hearing that we were considering whether to move to the area, they gave us a most helpful description of the surrounding towns and villages over a delicious breakfast in their lovely thatched cottage.

Marc, York

Carmel and David were helpful with our house-hunting; lots of advice about places to buy, activities (including walking) and their own house buying. They pointed us to the George Inn, close by; it was an excellent meal. Carmel’s breakfast - for us vegetarians - was also excellent. The room is in fact more than a room with several comfortable chairs and a tv, plus ensuite and equipped kitchen. This was comfortable, and we stayed during what was a cold night outside. The website describes the charm of the cottage, the garden, getting in and out, etc. It is an accurate description.

Local points of interest from Carmel Golding

  • Take a two minute walk to the nearest gastropub or drive, to the nearest town. The Georgian market town of Ampthill has pubs, restaurants, cafes, an antiques emporium, gift shops and a Waitrose. Walk in the fabulous Great Park, set out by Capability Brown.
  • Henry VIII hunted here at Ampthill Castle and his wife Catherine of Aragon was sent here when their divorce was in process. She introduced lace making to Bedfordshire. Kit Williams buried the Golden Hare at her monument.
  • Central Bedfordshire is Bunyan Country. Visit his birthplace at nearby Elstow and take in the ancient Abbey and Moot Hall. Then visit The Higgins art gallery and museum in Bedford wonderful exhibits and afterwards browse and eat in the Castle Quarter.
  • Visit Bletchley Park (THE secret intelligence centre of WW2- home of Enigma) only 25 minutes drive; or go back further in time to Woburn Abbey (6m) home of the Dukes of Bedford; or visit the gardens of Wrest Park (English Heritage) just three miles away.
  • Forge Cottage is on the Greensand Ridge, a forty mile footpath running across ancient settlements, wonderfully quiet and rural yet only 45mins by train to St.Pancras (a destination in itself) from nearby Flitwick Station.
  • Enjoy the food in this area, especially the venison and 'black' bacon from Woburn, wine from Warden Abbey and cereals from Jordan's Mill (open to visitors). We always serve Woburn bacon and Jordans cereals.
