This month’s Wanderlist features 30 places to spend all day out walking in nature with the sun on your back.
Discover the dense forests and hidden lakes of the Serra da Estrela from Portugal’s first mountain resort, stumble upon orange groves and hidden villages on your journey through Spain’s Sierra Nevada or seek out dolphins, puffins and minke whales as you explore picturesque Pembrokeshire beaches.
Your host Prem organises hiking and biking weeks (yoga, painting, Portuguese and meditation/massage courses, too) and provides proper walking maps for you to follow. There’s a lovely saltwater pool to come home to, a hammock between the orange trees, and Prem on hand to give massages for aching bones.
Once the snow has melted, Châtel becomes green and lush revealing the brilliant walking trails in the mountains. There is an impressive 90km network of walking trails that are well maintained and signposted, within and around the Abondance villages as well as high up among the peaks.
You get the best of all worlds here: utter peace and space with huge grounds – woods, olive and fruit trees, manicured lawns and wonderful views, whilst being close to Lake Garda. The western shore of the lake is inside a protected park – Riserva Naturale Orientata della Rocca e del Sasso – head here for brilliant walking paths.
Trundle down a rough track to an old worker’s cottage surrounded by 40 acres of wildflower meadows. The Preseli Hills are easy to reach as well as Carningli mountain, the site of ancient forts and spectacular mountain views.
Staggering views fill this design-driven B&B and there are brilliant walks straight from the door. Fill up for the day with breakfast on the terrace, then take to Horn Head and the Wild Atlantic Way.
