The Experience

Walnut House stands alone just behind the Duncombe Arms and has views of Dove Valley and the Derbyshire Hills in the distance. Find homemade biscuits, tea and coffee in your room, plus comfy armchairs, magazines to flick through and original artworks on the walls.

Huge breakfasts in the pub feature top quality ingredients sourced from local farms – lunch and dinner are a treat too. Sip a pint of Duncombe Ale, specially brewed for the pub, or try one of the 40 craft gins; you can play dominoes in front of the fire, chat to the friendly locals (this place gets busy in summer) or sit out on the garden in fine weather.

A range of activities and spectacular scenery in the Peak District National Park are within half an hour’s drive, as are water sports on Carsington Water. English Heritage houses such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall are within an hour’s drive.

Reviews

Very well appointed rooms with countryside views. Very good food served by friendly, knowledgeable staff. A new dining extension has been added this year opening out on to the outside dining area.

What's not to love about Walnut House? Beautifully furnished and decorated rooms with sumptuously comfortable beds, exquisite bathrooms, an expresso coffee machine and views over the Derbyshire Hills. Add to the mix, the most delicious breakfast served by friendly and attentive staff in an atmospheric and historic pub and you are all set to enjoy all that this region offers. Then book dinner here!

Location

The neighbourhood

The B&B is set in the small village of Ellastone and is surrounded by cottages, with the nearest shops three miles away in Rocester. There are two or three footpaths of varying length that leave from your door: one short and circular, another of about six miles that leads to Calwich Abbey.

Local points of interest from James Oddy

  • We are minutes away from the start of the Pennines and on the doorstep of some of the most stunning countryside in the UK. Explore the immediate area with walks or cycle rides that look over the picturesque Weaver Hills.
  • Dovedale, the gateway to Derbyshire, is only 15 minutes away. Why not visit the River Dove? One of the best fresh water fishing rivers, made famous by Izaak Walton.
  • 10 minutes away in Wootton Hall you can visit the restored Jean Jacque Rousseau Gardens. Alton Towers is close by for thrill-seekers wanting an eventful day with the family. A paradise for shoppers, the lovely Market Town of Ashbourne is also close by.
  • 15 minutes from Uttoxter for cinemas, skating and bowling, 20 minutes from Carsington Reservoir -ideal for watersports and walks. 20 minutes from Wild Park Leisure for paint-balling and quad biking.
  • 30 minutes from Kedleston, Robert Adam’s neo classical masterpiece and the home of the Curzon family. Experiencing the opulence and grandeur of this magnificent house and park is a must when visiting the local area.
  • 30 minutes from the Potteries where you can visit a myriad of factories, including Emma Bridgewater, where the children can get creative with their own hand-painted personalised pottery.
