The Experience

Gianludovico and his British wife Camilla bought this uninhabited, ancient palazzo 25 years ago and have gradually brought it back to life. Gianludovico is a former diplomat and great raconteur, Camilla is a passionate painter and sculptor (her workshop and gallery are also here) – they invite you to join them for a drink on arrival. You enter from the street into a courtyard with stairs up to the first floor and the Gallery, a luminous corner bedroom with plum coloured walls, plenty of paintings, antique tiled floors, a canopy bed and views to the sea. Up more stairs to another large bedroom with an Indian four-poster, honeycomb tiled floors, antique armoires and oriental carpets. The dining room has a Moroccan feel with warm red-orange walls: here you breakfast on bocconotti biscuits, locally-made cakes, fresh ricotta, hams and sardines. There’s much to see and explore in this un-touristy region and lots of beaches with clear water for swimming.

Reviews

We had a lovely stay with Camilla and Gianludovico. The accommodation is amazing. A grand, airy Italian palazzo on the edge of a cliff. Big bright and breezy rooms, with lots of very interesting, eclectic artwork on the walls. The views across to the sea are breath-taking. The hosts are very accommodating and helpful, with lots of knowledge on the best restaurants, cafes and sights nearby. We would definitely stay here again.

What a wonderful stay. We arrived with large suitcases and will forever fondly remember the pulley system to get them to the 4th floor (it was also used to bring croissants up for breakfast from the bakery next door!) On arrival, we were amazed at the views from the terrace, over Amantea and the sea - fabulous. Thanks to Camilla and Gianludovico for being delightful hosts who we enjoyed drinks, a delicious dinner and great chats with. We would highly recommend a stay here. Thanks, Sally & Kate

I have never experienced a more theatrical and beautiful campari and soda in my life. Sitting on the roof terrace of the Palazzo with a view reaching down to the sea, under the illuminated castle ruins with the stars twinkling in the night sky. Amantea is a joy in itself and the surrounding countryside, with incredible walks. It is not necessary to have transport - buses and trains are numerous and easy to reach. Walks are so varied from the Palazzo itself - mountains, ruined Franciscan monasteries, rivers, sea - all just a footstep outside the front portico!
