The Experience

Generous, hospitable Jo and Nick are passionate about their little corner of the world. They are realising their dream of running an eco-friendly, organic, self-sufficient smallholding and you get to share in the bounty: perhaps eggs from happy hens, apples from the orchard, homemade scones and jam – whatever’s seasonal. And Sawday’s guests get their first basket of logs for the wood-burner on the house.

The Barn, Gallery, Music Room and their home all share a sun-dappled courtyard but are nicely private. The Barn and Gallery both sleep four and have an upside-down layout with an open-plan living-dining areas upstairs: white-washed walls, local art on the walls. Modern kitchens have coffee machines and all the kit you need.

Downstairs to two comfy bedrooms (one double, one twin/double); bathrooms have rainfall power showers. Kids will adore it here: collect eggs, feed the goats, spot newts in the pond. Head out to swim, cycle or sail – boaty Salcombe is close.

Reviews

Chantry is in a truly magical location, down a long drive in the middle of beautiful, unspoilt Devon countryside. Situated in a pretty courtyard filled with flowers and birdsong both properties are wonderfully spacious with everything you need for a perfect stay, including smart coffee machines and organic beans. Lovely Nick and Jo are full of tips and ideas for walks, visits and beaches.

Sheila, Sawday's Inspector

Our 3 day break at The Gallery was very enjoyable. It was most comfortable, and the whole of Chantry Farm is quite a charming place to stay - very peaceful and quiet. Given the current circumstances and restrictions, it felt a safe place to be with good attention paid to Covid guidelines.

Penny, Winchester

We had a fantastic stay in the Barn! Jo and Nick were incredibly welcoming, from providing delicious homemade cakes on arrival to letting our 2 year old son feed the chickens and Bertie goat (the highlight of his week). The Barn itself is beautiful and we spent many a happy evening in front of the woodburning stove. We thoroughly recommend Chantry Barn and will definitely be returning. Wonderful place for both families and couples! Thank you Jo and Nick for a wonderful holiday.

Ailsa, Edinburgh

We had a wonderful stay at the Barn over Easter. Nick and Jo are lovely hosts and their property is really beautiful and peaceful. The Barn is wonderfully re-decorated and had everything we could have asked for. We felt very welcome, it was a great place to be with kids (they loved feeding the goats and chicken) but we would definitely come back just as a couple as well. The nearby Beaches are all we had hoped for. Definitely happy to recommend and we will come back!

Location

The neighbourhood

You can roam freely on the owners' land, much of which is being re-wilded and is filled with wildlife and birds. The nearest pub is a 2-minute drive or 15-minute walk. The Village Store and Post Office in Aveton Gifford just down the road is handy for stocking up. For a fun and friendly beach vibe, The Oyster Shack is a 5-minute drive on the tidal road. Modbury and Kingsbridge are 5 miles.

Local points of interest from Jo & Nick Woodman

  • Explore wild coves and teeming rockpools, charge around Blackdown Rings hill fort, climb some of Dartmoor's Torrs - all within easy reach
  • Kids are very warmly welcome and free to go wild - we have lawns for games, banks to roll down, and fields to roam (and we have plenty of games and books to borrow on rainy days).
  • Walk along the Avon estuary to Bantham beach, for a swim or a surf and stop for food in The Sloop before heading home.
  • A birdwatchers haven, with egrets, kingfishers and dippers in the Avon estuary, Efford Marsh and Andrews Wood nature reserves close by, and barn owls quartering our meadows (if you are lucky!)
  • Footpaths lead straight from our fields, or use Chantry as a base for stretches of the coast path - try Wonwell beach to Prawle Point.
  • Kingsbridge makes a great base for food gathering, with a farmers market, great fish shop, butchers and bakery and plenty of delis, cafes and restaurants. .

Introducing

Jo & Nick Woodman

Jo and Nick are letting nature be paramount in their 10 hectares of meadows and 5 hectares of woodland. They've increased biodiversity, whilst raising sheep for wool and producing enough wood to sustainably heat the Barn, Gallery and their own home using a biomass boiler. By late 2022 they will have started to plant thousands of native trees on their land as part of a major project by The Woodland Trust in the Avon Valley.
